Mixing and storage

The clinic handles all of this. The vacuum-dried vial is reconstituted only with sterile preservative-free 0.9 percent sodium chloride, drawn in gently and never shaken, and the vial is discarded if the vacuum does not pull the diluent in, since that means the seal has failed. A 100 Unit vial with 2.5 mL gives 4 Units in every 0.1 mL, the standard working strength. The date and time of reconstitution go on the label, it is kept in the fridge at 2 to 8 degrees, and it is used within 24 hours. Unopened vials are stored by the clinic in a fridge or freezer per the label.
