It is placed by an anaesthetist, into the fluid around the spinal cord, in an operating theatre or a specialist pain setting, with the person monitored afterwards. The documented human amount is about 20 micrograms placed intrathecally after surgery, which held pain relief for around 43 hours from that single placement. It is given into a vein only in research settings with full monitoring, because the whole-body route needs far more molecule to reach the same receptors and brings the breathing risk with it. Nothing in this molecule's forty-five year record involves a route anyone uses at home.
