L-carnitine: the fat shuttle
Long-chain fatty acids cannot cross into the mitochondria on their own. L-carnitine carries them across the inner membrane through the CPT1 and CPT2 enzymes, so they can be burned for energy. Without enough carnitine, fat that has been released from fat cells has nowhere to go. In muscle and the heart, more carnitine means more fat burned as fuel.
