LL-37, Cathelicidin · How it works
Breaking microbial membranes
LL-37 is a positively charged helix. It sticks to the negatively charged outer membrane of bacteria and fungi, gathers into a cluster and opens pores. The microbe leaks and dies. Human cell membranes carry less negative charge and cholesterol, so they are spared at normal levels.
