Melatonin · How it works
Setting the body clock
Melatonin binds the MT1 and MT2 receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the master clock in the brain. MT1 quiets the clock neurons to open the door to sleep. MT2 shifts the clock's timing earlier or later. The rest of the body's clocks, in liver, gut and fat, read the same signal.
