Melatonin · How it works
Antioxidant in the mitochondria
Melatonin directly neutralises the hydroxyl radical, the most damaging free radical, and its breakdown products keep neutralising more. It also switches on the enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Mitochondria take it up and even make it. This protects DNA and membranes from oxidative ageing.
