Melatonin · How it works
Pineal decline and ageing
Night-time melatonin falls steadily with age, and in older people the peak can be a fraction of a young person's. Vladimir Anisimov's group in St. Petersburg treated melatonin as a geroprotector, a molecule that slows ageing. In mice, night-time melatonin extended lifespan. Restoring the night signal is part of restoring a young rhythm.
