NAD+ · How it works
The electron shuttle
NAD+ picks up electrons when the cell breaks down sugar and fat, and becomes NADH. NADH hands those electrons to complex I of the mitochondria, which drives the pump that makes ATP. Without enough NAD+, glycolysis and the Krebs cycle slow down at the same step. The cell feels it as low energy and a shift toward lactate.
