Less free radical leak

A damaged energy chain leaks free radicals that harm the cell. SS-31 concentrates about 1,000-fold in the inner membrane and its dimethyltyrosine scavenges radicals at the source. It blocks mitochondrial swelling and the permeability pore that triggers cell death. Heart muscle keeps its contracting force after loss of blood flow.
