VIP, Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide · How it works
The brain's clock
VIP neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus keep the master clock's cells firing in step. Without VIP, the clock breaks into many weak, unsynchronised rhythms. That links VIP to sleep timing, hormone rhythms and the hypothalamus's control of the body. In chronic inflammatory illness, low VIP goes along with poor regulation of these hormone axes.
